Last night, Yellow Jacket Outfielder Matthew West was named the 2018 Coach Carroll Emery award winner. Mrs. Emery presented Matthew with his award before the Jackets won their game vs. JL Mann, 4-1. Matthew is the son of Matt and Susan West and adds his name to the plaque with last years winner, Jackson Kelley.
Coach Carroll Emery, a native of Piedmont, SC and a graduate of Wofford College, was the Head Baseball Coach at T.L. Hanna High School for 38 years. His baseball teams won 427 games, 11 Region Championships, and 2 Upper State titles. He was an Assistant Coach in the North-South Baseball Game in 1985 and was Head Coach in 1989. In 1985 Coach Emery was nominated by the SC Athletic Coaches Association to be considered for the National Baseball Coach of the Year Award. He was inducted into the inaugural class of T.L. Hanna’s Hall of Fame in 2009, and was selected for the SCACA Hall of Fame in 2012. While he coached several players who later played professionally, he held all student-athletes to a high moral standard, and expected all of his players to conduct themselves in a professional manner while showing respect for the game he loved.
